Visceral surgery is concerned with diseases of the organs of the digestive tract, but also the diaphragm and other abdominal organs such as the spleen and endocrine glands (for example the thyroid). In our hospitals, surgeons use both conventional surgical techniques (laparotomy) and also ultramodern minimally invasive techniques such as laparoscopy (the introduction of specific surgical instruments by means of a keyhole technique and instrument guidance via a link to a camera, which provides a direct image of the affected organs). Visceral surgery also includes endocrinological procedures, surgery of the mammary glands, surgical oncology and proctology (diseases of the anus and rectum).
