Hand surgery as a specialty is concerned with impairments of hand function. This includes lesions of the upper extremities of a traumatic, congenital or degenerative nature that do not always require surgery for treatment: in most cases, targeted medical treatment (orthotics, physiotherapy, injections or medicines) produces an improvement or cure of the condition.

Hands allow us to eat, dress, write, earn a living, create art, and do many other activities.

Achieving all these tasks require from our hands both sensation and movement, finely integrated in joint motion, tendon gliding and muscles contraction. When a problem takes place in the hand, care must specifically address all the different types of tissues that make function of the hand possible.

Hand surgery is the field of medicine that deals with diseases and accidents involving the hand, wrist and forearm.

Hand surgeons care for these problems with or without surgery, and they are specially trained to specific surgical procedures when necessary.

Hand surgeons are orthopaedic, plastic or general surgeons who have additional training in surgery of the hand.

To become members of the Swiss Society for Surgery of the Hand, hand surgeons must take two years of additional training and must pass a rigorous certifying examination.
